PUBLIC NOTICE: MATOMELA LOAD REDUCTION SCHEDULE
Monday, 13 July 2026
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate advises residents supplied by the Matomela Substation that load reduction may be implemented on Monday, 13 July 2026, due to overloading of the 31.5MVA transformer during the evening peak period. The second transformer is currently out of service while refurbishment work is being finalised, resulting in limited network capacity.
17:00 – 19:00 | Group 4
AREAS / STREETS AFFECTED:
Nduma 1, Maqoma, Hostel, Saba, Tonjeni, Booi, Matodlana, Konza, Bertram, Tavu, Loyiso School, Mle Street, Mnotoza, Ngqondela and surrounding areas.
19:00 – 21:00 | Group 5
AREAS / STREETS AFFECTED:
Wolfson Stadium, Maguga Street 1, Tsotsobe Street, Qaqawuli Area, Kale Street, Tshangana Street, Stofile Street, Ngqondela, Maqubela Street, Ngwendu, Bazi, Day Hospital, Place of Safety, Mandela Village, Seyisi Street, Mahambehlala, KwaZakhele, Silvertown, Boxongo Street, Ndongeni Street, Mandleni Street, Mvubu, KwaZakhele 2, Makwela, Nobatana, Zokwana, Nomjila, Marwana and surrounding areas.
Residents are encouraged to switch off high-consumption appliances, including geysers, stoves and heaters, during the outage period and to switch them back on gradually once electricity supply has been restored. This will help reduce the risk of overloading the network and support the stable restoration of electricity supply.
Please Note:
Load reduction will only be implemented if required due to high electricity demand. If demand remains within the available network capacity, customers will not be affected according to the schedule.
The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanks residents for their patience and cooperation.
WATER SUPPLY UPDATE
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality advises residents that repairs to the affected pipeline have been completed. However, the recovery of water supply has been slower than anticipated due to temporary supply constraints from the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works.
As a result, several areas supplied through the Bethelsdorp, Bloemendal and Chatty reservoir systems experienced water outages. These include:
* Hillside
* Bloemendal
* Arcadia
* South Soliway
* Booysens Park
* Chatty (all areas)
* Reservoir Hills
* Joe Slovo West
* KwaDwesi
* Bethelsdorp and surrounding areas
Water has already been restored to the Bloemendal Reservoir, and the system is currently recovering. Final operational adjustments are underway before supply is restored to the Bethelsdorp Reservoir. Most affected areas are expected to receive water progressively throughout the day, although higher-lying areas may experience a longer recovery period.
Residents supplied through the Emerald Hill Reservoir, including Wells Estate/Warmer Heights and surrounding areas, may also have experienced reduced water pressure or intermittent supply while water was redirected to support the recovery of the northern supply system. These areas are expected to recover over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Although the repair work has been completed, the saturated ground conditions require operators to reintroduce the repaired pipeline cautiously to ensure the integrity of the infrastructure. The larger of the two pipelines has now been brought back into operation, which will significantly assist with system recovery.
The Municipality will provide a further update following the next operational assessment scheduled for midday.
The NMBM thanks residents for their patience and understanding while the water distribution system continues to recover.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY UPDATE – NEW BRIGHTON, KWAZAKHELE, ZWIDE AND SURROUNDING AREAS
Thursday, 2 July 2026
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate would like to provide residents with an update on the ongoing electricity supply challenges affecting New Brighton, KwaZakhele, Zwide and surrounding areas.
Municipal technical teams have been working on the 31MVA transformer at the Matomela Substation with the aim of ending the current load reduction and restoring the network to normal operating conditions.
However, during the energisation process and while transferring customers onto the transformer, technical teams identified abnormal activity on the 31MVA transformer. If left unattended, this could result in a major fault or failure of the transformer. As a precautionary measure, the transformer has not been placed into service while further technical assessments are undertaken.
In the interim, the 20MVA transformer will continue supplying the affected areas. To reduce pressure on the network and maintain a stable electricity supply, the Municipality appeals to residents to use electricity sparingly, particularly during peak periods. Where possible, residents are requested to switch off high-consumption appliances such as electric heaters and geysers until further notice.
AFFECTED AREAS:
* New Brighton
* KwaZakhele
* Zwide
* Surrounding areas
The Municipality sincerely apologises for the continued inconvenience and appreciates the patience, understanding and cooperation shown by residents, businesses and essential service providers. Our technical teams remain on site and are working diligently to resolve the matter safely and as quickly as possible.
