WATER SUPPLY UPDATE
04 May 2026
Following the power outages experienced at Loerie, recovery has started in the KwaNobuhle area. Two of the three reservoirs have already received water and are recovering well.
The high-lying areas supplied by the remaining reservoir are still experiencing challenges, and we will assess the need to provide water tanks in those areas if required.
The Chatty area was also affected, as we had to redirect additional water from Nooitgedagt to support the Chelsea supply zone. The western areas have since recovered, and the Chelsea zone has also stabilized.
However, challenges remain in the Tyreville, Vanes Estate area, and surrounding areas previously identified. We have implemented operational adjustments, which have yielded positive results. However, ongoing backwashing and desludging activities at the Coega Kop Water Treatment Works continue to impact the speed of recovery.
We are also progressively increasing the amount of water supplied from Nooitgedagt until levels improve. At the same time, we are being cautious not to increase production too aggressively, as maintaining good water quality remains a priority.
In summary, recovery is underway across most affected areas, with only a few localized challenges remaining. We continue to monitor the system closely and implement measures to improve supply while ensuring water quality standards are maintained.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

WATER DISRUPTION UPDATE
29 May 2026
The NMBM is monitoring the situation in the affected areas and assessing what further improvements can be made. Currently, water is being pumped at the Kabah Water Works reservoir; however, the amount of water we are able to pump remains dependent on the high turbidity levels in the area.
Secondly, a burst pipe occurred in the Chatty area, which damaged the reservoir outlet. As a result, the entire Chatty reservoir supply zone has been affected. Water trucks will therefore also be deployed to assist residents in those affected areas.
Lastly, there is a burst pipe in New Brighton, which affected water supply to the area, which was successfully repaired yesterday. The system is slowly recovering; however, isolated pockets continue to affect the overall stability of the water supply. Operations teams are making continuous adjustments to restore and maintain water supply to residents as quickly as possible.
Water tanker positions will be shared timeously.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
