BURSARIES

What is it?

 
A Bursary is a financial assistance or award made to candidates, deemed to be eligible for financial aid towards their tuition fees. The successful candidates will be sponsored or funded towards their tuition fees in a course deemed to be critical study area by the NMBM. 

Who is the custodian?

 
Skills Development and Employment Equity sub-directorate within Corporate Service Directorate is responsible for coordinating and administration of the bursaries for the unemployed within Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. 

Who is this service for?

 
The service is intended for South African citizens residing in NMBM meeting the minimum criteria to be bursary holder also qualifying in terms of entry requirements of intended learning institution.
 

What is needed for the beneficiary to attend?

 
The intended recipients of bursaries will differ based on the criteria put out in various courses by the institutions of higher learning however primarily student must meet the following minimum criteria: 

  • Be South African citizen residing in Gqeberha or Kariega
  • Be under the age of 30 when submitting application
  • Have a proven financial need, will be required from candidate when shortlisted
  • Have a minimum academic average of 60%in the year that they apply for bursary
  • Have a minimum average of 60% on the required subjects for the course applying for
  • Have successfully obtained admission /acceptance letter from a recognized and accredited South African public university for one of the qualifications listed in the advert
  • Intend to study full time on one of the qualifications advertised 

 

How long will it take to be notified of the placement?

 
The bursary advert closed at end of January and bursary committee has to convene to award bursaries to eligible candidates in February. 

(At the end of February applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application)
 

Where is the service offered?

 
The service is available at Starport building Govern Mbeki on the 15th floor, Skills Development and Employment Equity sub-directorate. The online portal is only accessible to employees once it available to the public such pronouncement will be published. 

When is this service available?

 
Bursary advert is made available annually in the last two months of the year in preparing for the intake in the new academic year.
 

How is this service going to take place?

 
The NMBM is responsible for payment of registration and tuition fees to the institution of higher learning where the candidate has been approved and for the course, they have been awarded bursary for.
