BURMAN ROAD REOPENS AS CITY STEPS UP DRIVE TO FIX THE METRO AND BOOST INDUSTRIAL

Burman Road is now reopened to traffic, following the completion of major rehabilitation works by the Municipality, restoring an important transport link serving residents, workers and businesses in one of the Metro’s industrial areas.
The road was closed following the collapse of a bulk sewer line beneath Burman Road, requiring extensive repairs to the underground infrastructure before the road could be rebuilt.
The Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Department undertook the sewer repairs, after which the road structure was reinstated, including the affected road layers. Traffic management measures were implemented at the N2 and Burman Road interchange during the construction period.
The road rehabilitation project was conceived on 4 August 2026 and completed at a cost of R1.955 million, including VAT.

For residents, the restored road provides improved access to employment, businesses and surrounding areas. For the industrial and commercial sector, it restores an important route used by employees, suppliers, service providers and commercial vehicles.
The intervention is part of the administration’s broader programme to fix and maintain Metro’s infrastructure and improve the connections between communities and areas of economic activity.
The Municipality’s infrastructure programme is focused on addressing critical infrastructure challenges, restoring roads and municipal services, and improving the reliability of the infrastructure that residents and businesses depend on.
The link between infrastructure and economic growth is direct. Reliable roads enable people to reach places of work, businesses to operate efficiently and goods to move between communities, industrial areas and markets.
Maintaining these connections is particularly important in building an inclusive local economy in which residents across the Metro can access opportunities and businesses can operate in a more reliable environment.
Burman Road is now open to motorists. Minor snagging and finishing works remain, including road markings and other items identified during the final inspection. The outstanding work is expected to continue during the coming week, subject to suitable weather conditions and operational requirements.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed and comply with temporary traffic measures while the remaining work is completed.
The R1.955 million cost relates specifically to the road rehabilitation and reinstatement works. The cost of repairing the bulk sewer network is separate and will be confirmed by the relevant municipal department.
The administration remains focused on fixing the Metro’s infrastructure, strengthening connections between communities and economic centres, and ensuring that municipal infrastructure supports inclusive economic growth.
