Spring has sprung, and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is intensifying its efforts to plant more flowers and beautify the Metro, resonating with its Friendly City status. The work commenced last month at Heugh Road in Walmer, where a total of 236 plants were planted to the delight of residents.

Public Health Mayoral Committee Member, Cllr Thsonono Buyeye, said: "We are pleased to see the project taking shape as this contributes to changing the face of our Metro and ensures that the areas are actually clean. These operations are important; they are related to the broader public health work that we do and also include waste management, which is a challenge in our Metro. Our residents and visitors to the Metro can expect to see a beautiful and green Friendly City as they know it.” "The work will be rolled out in Gqeberha, Kariega, and Despatch. We do not have flower beds in Colchester, especially the face of Colchester as that is a National Road, but the parks we have in the area are maintained. We are changing the face of our Metro; when people land in our City, they must be met with a clean and green City.

A total of 300 plants will be planted along Cape Road, with other strategic areas to be covered, including the beachfront area, KwaNobuhle, M4 Settlers Way, Addo Road, Red House, Cuyler and Caledon Street in Kariega, and Botha Street in Despatch. Residents have welcomed the initiative. "We are happy to see such beauty; it came at the right time. We can see the efforts to beautify our Metro; this festive season will be bright, and visitors will also see the beauty and that our Metro is well kept,” said resident Mandla Faltein.

The NMBM is calling on all residents and businesses to join hands with the Metro in this beautification project. By working together, we can ensure that our city remains clean, green, and welcoming. Here’s how you can contribute: Participate in community clean-ups to help keep our streets and parks litter-free. Businesses and community groups can adopt a public space to maintain and beautify. Help us protect our public spaces by reporting any acts of vandalism to the authorities. Residents are encouraged to plant flowers and trees in their gardens and maintain the greenery around their homes.

This beautification project offers numerous benefits to both residents and businesses. For residents, a cleaner and greener environment enhances the quality of life, promotes mental well-being, and fosters community pride. Well-maintained public spaces provide safer and more enjoyable areas for recreation and social activities. For businesses, a visually appealing environment attracts more customers, boosts local commerce, and can increase property values. A collaborative effort in maintaining the Metro’s beauty also strengthens community bonds and encourages a sense of shared responsibility. "We believe that a collaborative effort is essential for the success of this initiative. Let’s work together to create a Metro that we can all be proud of,” said Cllr Buyeye.
