The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is working tirelessly to put in place measures to combat rampant vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure, in particular of the electrical substations, which normally causes major electrical disruptions throughout the city.

Today, Executive Mayor Cllr Nqaba Bhanga oversaw the installation of an advanced alarm system at Korsten's Durban Rd Towers. The alarm will assist in activating a linked rapid armed response.

"As a City we have taken a conscious decision to appoint five security armed response companies, to protect our major assets, that provide electricity to our residents. There has been several electricity outages as well as vandalism of our substations, which resulted in outages for about 5 days. We want to stop this, and it is for this reason that we want to deal with criminals decisively, because this affects people’s livelihood and the economy,” said Mayor Bhanga.

Mayor Bhanga also added, "We are therefore ensuring the presence of armed response in our City in order that we are able to act and react decisively against criminals. We also have 24/7 monitoring of our main roads by our internal Security and Metro Police Departments, and as a result of this intervention, we have been able to catch some of these criminals.”

The City will be installing the alarm systems at substations that have been identified to be at risk of being vandalised.

Residents are encouraged to partner with the City in safeguarding municipal facilities by reporting any suspicious activity to the vandalism hotline on 041 506 5500.
