TASK Grade 20 (R810 384 - R1 126 632 per annum)

(Basic salary only, excluding benefits) 

In compliance with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Employment Equity Plan, preference will be given to suitably qualified African/Coloured/Indian (female) applicants. 


  • B. degree (Electrical Engineering).
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer/Professional Engineering Technologist (ECSA).
  • Eight years’ relevant experience.
  • A valid Code B driver’s licence. 


  • Must be physically fit and able-bodied.
  • Must be able to perform manual operations and duties on foot and inspect substations at any time of day or night in severe weather conditions.
  • Must render emergency standby duty 24 hours per day.
  • Must be able to cope with mental stress associated with the taking of risky decisions and giving instructions under any emergency conditions on the 600 MVA 132 kV High Voltage Distribution Network or faults on the communications network or protection system – wrong decisions on a 600 MVA 132 kV Electricity Distribution Plant could cause equipment failure involving great financial or production loss and/or risk of injury or death. This stress is a constant part of the job.
  • Must be able to meet frequent unforeseen and conflicting deadlines and interruptions in the job, Council and committee meetings, management meetings, public meetings, e.g. to explain power interruptions, reporting, etc.
  • Sight, speech and hearing ability. 

Job purpose: 

Providing strategic leadership, management and control and managing the Technical Services branch for sustainable quality of electricity supply and service delivery by formulating, initiating, coordinating, implementing and maintaining a shared strategic operational plan between the System Operations, Protection, Radio, Communications, Metering and Training Divisions.

As part of the selection process, candidates may be tested on any requirement, skill or competency, which will include pre-employment screening, security vetting and psychometric assessment.
