Hard work evident ahead of Ironman 70.3 World Championship – Diana Bertsch

Diana Bertsch, Vice President: Ironman World Championship praised Ironman South Africa, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality employees and other stakeholders for their hard work ahead of the Ironman 70.3 World Championship taking place on 1 and 2 September.

"Since my last visit in January it is evident from then and now, how hard everyone is working to make a success of this world-class event. Keep up the good work and the event will be the best it has ever been.

"During my visit, I went on a trip to Addo Elephant Park and could not even imagine the wildlife that I saw there. It was fun to see so many different animals.

"One thing is certain. Participants, their families and friends will walk away from here with memories like nowhere else in the world,” Bertsch said at an Ironman 70.3 World Championship Technical Task Team meeting today.

Keith Bowler, Managing Director: Ironman South Africa, reported that most accommodation establishments are almost fully booked for the first ever Ironman 70.3 World Championship to be held in Africa.

Bowler said this event will even be bigger than the successful Ironman African Championship hosted for the last thirteen years in Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay. The fourteenth edition of this popular triathlon takes place on 14 and 15 April.

Bertsch decried the recent attack on MBDA spokesperson and tri-athlete Luvuyo Bangazi when his bicycle and cell phone was stolen in Walmer.

"It is sad what happened to Luvuyo but sometimes incidents like these happen for a reason so that we can pay closer attention to what needs to be done,” she added.

More site visits will follow.
