GOOD ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE A CATALYST TOWARDS DEVELOPMENT OF TOWNSHIP ECONOMY

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has identified the maintenance of road infrastructure as a key catalyst towards the development of the township economy.  In this regard, the Municipality is fixing stormwater infrastructure in the area of Motherwell, now accelerating the process by employing more bricklayers.

Over the past three years, a backlog in stormwater maintenance has developed in the Motherwell area due to a lack of budget and poor planning.  This has led to flooding and damage to roads, making access for business delivery vehicles and emergency service very difficult if not impossible in some places.

The NMBM Directorate of Roads and Transport is in the process of employing more artisans to focus on stormwater maintenance in the Motherwell area. With two artisans already employed, the Directorate is already at work to eradicate the backlog in Motherwel.

This work is continuing at the same time as the EPWP driven project by Roads and Transport, which focuses on removing foreign objects from stormwater drains. The project was launched by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Athol Trollip, late last year in Uitenhage.

"This is a clear commitment to bring about change and put our money where it matters most. If we have plans of building township economy, a good road infrastructure is at the centre. Poor access by delivery and emergency vehicles to our townships will soon be a thing of the past," said Mayoral Committee Member, Councillor Rano Kayser.

Cllr Kayser added that feedback from residents at the recent Integrated Development Plan (IDP) public participation meetings clearly indicated that the improvement of roads must be prioritised. "We as a government have listened and we will bring about visible change," confirmed Cllr Kayser.

Cllr Kayser also added that better planning would underpin and improve the success rate of the work to be undertaken by the NMBM Roads and Transport Directorate over the next four years.
